How Do You Prevent Bed Bugs?
Preventing Bed Bugs:
Inspect Second-hand Furniture: Thoroughly check for signs of bed bugs before bringing second-hand furniture, especially beds and couches, into your home.
- Use Protective Covers: Encase mattresses and box springs in protective covers specifically designed to prevent bed bugs.
- Regularly Vacuum: To remove potential bed bugs, frequently vacuum your home, especially areas around beds and furniture.
- Reduce Clutter: Minimize clutter in your home to reduce hiding places for bed bugs.
- Seal Cracks and Crevices: Seal any cracks and crevices in walls, floors, and furniture to prevent bed bugs from hiding.
- Be Cautious When Traveling: Inspect hotel rooms for bed bugs, keep luggage off the floor, and wash all clothing in hot water after returning home.
- Launder Regularly: Regularly wash and heat-dry bed linens, blankets, and other items that touch the floor.
- Use Bed Bug Interceptors: Place bed bug interceptors under bed legs to catch bed bugs before they can climb onto the bed.
- Stay Vigilant: Regularly inspect your home for signs of bed bugs, such as small rust-colored stains, tiny eggs, or the bugs themselves.

Signs You Have a Bed Bug Problem
These signs can help you identify the presence of bed bugs and call our office so we can take appropriate measures:
Small Blood Spots on Bedding or Furniture
Bed bugs feed on human blood, and when they bite, they often leave behind tiny droplets of blood. These blood spots may appear as small red stains or smears on your sheets, pillowcases, or upholstery. However, it's important to note that these blood spots are not always easily visible, especially if the infestation is in its early stages. If you even suspect you have bed bugs, it’s a good idea to take a closer look at your bedding and furniture for any signs of these telltale marks.
Itchy Red Welts on Your Skin
Bed bugs are nocturnal pests, and the feeding on human blood noted above can happen while you are asleep. When bed bugs bite, they inject an anticoagulant into the skin to prevent blood from clotting, which can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals. As a result, you may develop itchy red welts on your skin after being bitten by bed bugs. These bites are usually small, raised, and often appear in a linear pattern or clusters.
Unpleasant and Musty Odor
Bed bugs release pheromones, which can emit a distinct smell that is often described as musty or sweet. This odor tends to become more noticeable as the infestation grows. If you notice a strange smell in your bedroom or other areas where you suspect bed bugs might be hiding, it's worth investigating further and giving us a call. The odor can be particularly strong in enclosed spaces such as closets or under mattresses.
Our Bed Bug Treatment Process
Every case is different, but the approach you can expect from our Knoxville bed bug control techs will generally follow this outline:
-
Inspection
Our bed bug control process begins with a thorough inspection of the area. Our experienced technicians seek to identify and locate areas where bed bugs may be hiding, such as in cracks and crevices or behind baseboards. We also assess the severity of the infestation by looking for signs such as eggs, larvae, or live insects.
-
Prep Work
During your inspection, our technician will talk with you about any prep work that must be done prior to the treatment to maximize its efficiency. This may include stripping beds and laundering all bedding, running dryer-safe items from the infested room through a high-heat dryer cycle, removing clutter from the area to be treated, and discarding any unnecessary paper, cardboard, or infested items.
-
Treatment
Once the prep work has been completed, our technicians will apply our safe, non-toxic liquid treatment to the affected areas and dust the wall voids. We also install a bed bug-killing encasement to your box springs that will actively prevent bed bugs for up to two years. After 14 days, we will return for a follow-up treatment.
Benefits of Our Liquid Treatment
At Southeast Termite & Pest Control, we offer liquid bed bug treatments as a superior alternative to traditional heat treatments. Here are some key benefits of our liquid treatments:
- Cost-effectiveness: Unlike heat treatments that require treating the entire square footage of your home, our liquid treatment allows us to target specific areas where the bed bugs are feeding.
- Longer protection: Our liquid treatment creates a barrier that keeps bed bugs away for up to three months. This extended protection adds an extra layer of defense against future infestations.
- Convenient treatment: Unlike heat treatments that require removing all heat-sensitive items, our liquid treatment simply requires clearing away clutter so our technicians can access the areas where bed bugs may be hiding.
- Effective elimination: Our techs are trained to target bed bugs' hiding spots and breeding areas. The liquid can effectively kill both adult bed bugs and their eggs.
- Environmentally friendly: We use EPA-approved products that are safe for both humans and pets.
